Fruit and vegetables shelf-life extension boost with plant respiration meter

After harvest, fruits and vegetables continue to respire and it is important keep them tasty and fresh for long as possible.  This requires a balance between shelf-life, plant respiration, and ethylene production is controlled by both the fruit or vegetable and the flow of gasses such as oxygen, CO2, H2O and ethylene (which is a gasseous plant ripening hormone).

This means you need to measure the fruit or vegetable's respiration rate and balance or control it with the packaging's permeability rates for the gasses involved.  Versaperm's latest plant respiration rate meter allows you to do this for all of these gasses with a single measurement.  Getting it wrong can radically reduce shelf life but the right match will boost freshness, shelf-life, quality and taste. 

Versaperm's dedicated plant respiration system for fruit and vegetables allows you to measure these for CO2, O2, ethylene and water vapour and all other common gasses under a wide range of temperature, humidity conditions and diurnal cycle conditions. Measurements are taken in real time for loose fruit and vegetables - and can even be made when they have already been packaged! – or are in a chilled cabinet.

The equipment gives precise results which can be either displayed on the instrument's touch-screen or recorded for further analysis. The basic instrument can measure the concentration of virtually any gas between -20C +65C, though this range can be extended.
